Paris 2024 is set to be a significant turning point for elite sports as it is the first Olympic Games to achieve full gender parity on the field of play. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has committed to delivering historic gender equality with a 50:50 split of male and female athletes across the Games for the first time ever.

A rather full circle moment, as the first time Paris hosted the Olympics in 1900 saw female athletes competing for the first time, making up only 2.2% of athletes.

For the second time in Olympic history, Team GB will have more female athletes representing their nation than male athletes. A total of 327 Team GB athletes are competing at the Paris Games, 172 of them female and 155 of them male.

Team GB are also welcoming a record of nine mothers to the Games, breaking stigmas around the incompatibility between motherhood and professional sport.

So who are some of these incredible women representing Team GB this summer?

TEAM GB WOMEN TO WATCH:

Dina Asher-Smith, 28 - Athletics (100m, 200m, 4x100m relay)

Currently holding the British record for the 100m and 200m, Asher-Smith is heading to her third Olympics where she has previously won two bronze medals in 2016 and 2020. She is on top form after securing two golds at the European Championships earlier this year and is looking to add to her medal collection in Paris.

Sky Brown, 16 - Skateboarding

Aged 13, Brown won bronze at Tokyo 2020 to become Britain's youngest Olympic medallist of all time. This time round, the skateboarding prodigy is looking to go one step further and take home silver or gold at Paris 2024.

Emma Finucane, 21 - Cycling

At 21 years old, Finucane is the reigning World and European sprint champion and she now has her sights set on a golden Olympic debut. If all goes to plan she has the chance to create Olympic history by becoming the first female to win three gold medals at a single Games.

Helen Glover, 38 - Rowing

Announcing her retirement after both Rio and Tokyo, Glover is set to make another comeback and secure her third Olympic gold. As one of the nine mums in Team GB, Glover believes motherhood has improved her career and this time round is performing better than ever.

Keely Hodgkinson, 22 - Athletics (800m)

As the underdog in Tokyo 2020, no one was more shocked than Hodgkingson when she broke Kelly Holmes’ British record and took home the silver medal. This year she goes into the Games as a gold medal favourite after being crowned European Champion earlier this year.

Katarina Johnson-Thompson, 31 - Athletics (Heptathlon)

Despite her array of titles including 2x World Champion, Johnson-Thompson is still waiting to stand on that Olympic podium. After an ordeal of injuries, Paris 2024 could finally be the year she takes home an Olympic medal.

Eva Okaro, 17 - Swimming (4x100m freestyle relay)

As the youngest swimmer in Team GB, Okaro is making Olympic history as the first black woman to represent the nation in the pool.

Bryony Page, 33 - Trampolining

With a bronze and silver Olympic medal under her belt, Page has her sights set on gold this year. After struggling with her mental health and experiencing a case of the ‘yips’, she is heading to Paris to hopefully complete her medal set.

Beth Shriever, 25 - BMX

She won Britain's first Olympic BMX title at Tokyo 2020 and Shriver is back after a collarbone injury, looking to defend her title.

Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix, 19 - Diving

After reaching the final at Tokyo 2020, the 19 year old is coming into Paris as a World, European, and Commonwealth champion, making her a clear favourite for this year's Games.

The Olympics will open in Paris on the 26th July and continue through to the 11th August.
